課程概述

This course is designed as an intensive training program for students to become effective ESL/EFL teachers. It provides students both theoretical principles and practical aspects for English teaching, particularly for course designs and teaching skills. Specifically, students will learn methods and techniques of English teaching and evaluation and design of teaching activities and materials. Students will also develop their professions through teaching demonstration, school visits, and classroom observation. 

課程目標
本課程的目標在提升學生的核心能力如下: (1)培養課程、教學與評量之知能,(2) 整合英語文學科知識與教育理論之實踐能力,(3)了解現行公私立中學英文科教學現況與教育體制與理念,(4)具備任教學科專業之知能。進一步說明如下:
This course is intended to prepare students to be effective high school English teachers. Specific course objectives include: (1) developing teaching skills and professional knowledge concerning course and teaching material designs, teaching methods, lesson planning, and language testing and assessment, (2) increasing practice and experience in classroom teaching, presentation, and observation, (3) understanding current EFL programs provided by public and private high schools, and (4) improving proficiency in classroom instruction and presentation.
 
課程要求
1. Cooperate with your group members and/or work individually to prepare and demonstrate a 10-15 minutes teaching (no longer than 15 minutes).
2. Choose any lesson you prefer or work on an assigned lesson.
3. Evaluate your classmates’ teaching demonstration and take notes during the presentation.
4. Dress formally and properly for your demo or student teaching and school visits.
5. Come to class on time.
* If you are 10 (or longer) minutes late for class, you’ll be marked “late” on the attendance sheet.
(845f) 0.5 point off from your final course grade
(上課遲到十分鐘以上, 計遲到一次, 一次遲到扣學期總平均0.5分)
* If you are 30 (or longer) minutes late for class or if you do not show up, you’ll be marked “absent” on the attendance sheet.
(845f) 2 points off from your final course grade
(上課遲到三十分鐘以上或未出席, 計缺席一次, 一次缺席扣學期總平均2分)
* If you are marked “absent” six (or more) times, you will not pass this course.
(本學期曠課達六次以上者 本課程學期成績 將以不及格計分)
* If you cannot come to the class meeting for a good reason, please obey the following rules:
1) 公假與產假: 最慢請於三日前, email告知任課老師, 並備學校公文或醫師看診證明. 所缺考的部分, 可於請假完畢的一星期內找老師補考. 未能補考者, 一律以零分計算. 另外須於上課當日繳交的作業, 須先請同學代為繳交. 或於請假完畢的一星期內補繳, 若未能於一星期內補交者, 一律以零分計算. (註: 有事先請公假或產假, 且任課老師有准假者, 不予扣分)
2) 病假: 最慢請於當日上課前, email告知任課老師. 並於請假完畢一星期內, 備醫師或看診證明向老師請假. 所缺考的部分, 可於請假完畢的一星期內找老師補考. 未能補考者, 一律以零分計算. 另外須於上課當日繳交的作業, 須先請同學代為繳交, 或於請假完畢的一星期內補繳. 若未能於一星期內補交者, 一律以零分計算. (註: 有附證明請病假, 且任課老師有准假者, 不予扣分. 但除非特殊狀況並附醫師證明, 且已獲任課老師准假者, 本學期病假不得請超過三次(含)以上, 超過三次(含)以上又無正當理由者, 仍以曠課論)
3) 事假: 最慢請於一日前, email告知任課老師. 並於請假完畢一星期內, 備家長證明向老師請假. 所缺考的部分, 可於請假完畢的一星期內找老師補考. 未能補考者, 一律以零分計算. 另外須於上課當日繳交的作業, 須先請同學代為繳交. 或於請假完畢的一星期內補繳, 若未能於一星期內補交者, 一律以零分計算. (註: 有附證明請事假, 且任課老師有准假者, 不予扣分. 但除非特殊狀況並附家長證明, 且已獲任課老師准假者, 本學期事假不得請超過二次(含)以上, 超過二次(含)以上又無正當理由者, 仍以曠課論)
請注意! 按規定, 缺席或請假不得超過學期上課的三分之一, 亦即本學期缺課不可超過六次, 否則本課程學期成績, 將以不及格計分. 另本學期全勤且從未遲到者, 學期總平均將予以加分, 以茲獎勵.

6. NEVER be late for or absent from your teaching or school visits.
Evaluation:
Attendance and participation 20%
Teaching demonstration (lesson plan, teaching, reflection) 40 %
Teaching portfolio and presentation 20%
Assignments

Micro-teaching (demo): Over the course of the semester, you are to give two teaching demos (15-20 minutes each) with one focusing on junior and the other on the senior high school materials(若以觀摩學校的課程內容語範圍為教材則不在此限). On the day of your teaching demo, you should bring 4 copies of your lesson plan to class (one for me and three others for your classmates for peer evaluation). You are required to send me your lesson plans ahead of time for feedback by Monday night. After your teaching demo, you need to submit a revision of lesson plan (since your lesson plan won’t be perfect!) and a 2-paged reflection stating some of the challenges and lessons you learned from teaching your own lesson plan. Use the “review” function to mark the changes you wish to make in the lesson plan. The reflection is due the week after your teaching demo.


Assignments:
Classroom observation report: There are scheduled classroom observation periods this semester. After each week’s observation, you need to submit a 2-3 paged classroom observation report. The reports are due on Sunday. See observation guidelines for more information.
觀摩與試教說明:
1. 兩週為觀摩週,每週觀摩至少一班的完整課程(需簽出習表,若有衝堂或考試可請假一、兩堂課,但須事先告知我及輔導教師)。當週觀摩結束要撰寫observation report,並於當週日上傳至CEIBA.
2. WEEK 3 為試教週,需事先擬定好教案與學習單,並必須於試教前與輔導教師討論。試教後與輔導教師檢討,並針對試教表現撰寫reflection. 於teaching portfolio 中需包含original lesson plan, 2-3 paged reflection, one additional lesson plan 標示實際教學中增刪部份。If you’re ever so lucky to get to teach more than once, just submit one lesson plan and reflection would be enough.

3. During the teaching week, you will observe your peer and provide him/her with thoughtful feedback!

4. VIDEO-TAPE your teaching session as you will need to submit a copy of the tape in the final teaching portfolio. (If you have more than one teaching session, just select the best one).

5. Your final teaching portfolio should include: Two observation reports, one lesson plan, a revised lesson plan marked with the changes made during actual teaching, teaching demo DVD, 2-3 paged teaching reflection, peer feedback form.
